Last week, Holtec International, the corporation in charge of decommissioning the shuttered Indian Point nuclear facility, sued the state of New York over passage of the popular Save the Hudson Bill last year. Groups with the Stop Holtec Coalition will rally Thursday at 5 p.m. before the Indian Point Decommissioning Board meeting in Cortlandt, in support of the Save the Hudson Bill. Groups will call for on-site radioactive waste storage at Indian Point, to further protect the Hudson River environment and communities.

Food & Water Watch Senior New York Organizer Santosh Nandabalan issued the following statement:

“Holtec’s dangerous plan to dump more than one million gallons of toxic radioactive waste into the Hudson River provoked widespread outrage from the start. Passage of the Save the Hudson Bill was a tremendous victory for our environment, communities and regional River economy. This legislative triumph of people power over corporate expediency is here to stay.”

Governor Hochul signed the Save the Hudson Bill (A7208/S6893), which prohibits dumping radioactive waste from decommissioning nuclear plants into the Hudson River, into law in August 2023, after it passed the Senate unanimously 63-0, and by a large margin in the Assembly, 100-44. This was the culmination of advocacy from more than 138 environmental organizations, at least 35 Hudson River localities, and nearly 500,000 online petition signers.
