Washington, D.C. — Today, Trump’s Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced a proposed rule requiring food corporations to report when their products include ingredients that are “generally recognized as safe.” The proposed rule would not, however, stop those chemicals from entering the food supply. Last year, President Trump eliminated 3,500 FDA staff, hamstringing the agency.

In response, Food & Water Watch Food Policy Director Rebecca Wolf issued the following statement:

“While today’s proposed rule is a baby step towards safer food, it falls short of the true reform needed to keep dangerous chemicals out of the food supply. For decades, corporations have exploited the GRAS loophole to self-police which chemicals make it into the food we eat. We need stronger regulation to close the loophole once and for all, and we need to invest in the agencies charged with ensuring food safety.”
