Policy

Europe’s approach to agriculture needs to be refocused. It claims to improve the “efficiency” and “competitiveness” of EU farms, but it fails to count the cost.

While fundamentally unsustainable factory farms spread, tens of thousands of small and family farms are driven out of business. Quality food is undermined, animal welfare suffers and jobs are lost.

Rather than support jobs and communities, policies foster increased reliance on imported industrial soya as cheap fuel for the factory farms while communities overseas pay the price.

Rather than respond to calls for food sovereignty, subsidies are channelled away from small farms to support the biggest operators.

Rather than invest in a stable future, lobbyists ensure supermarkets and agribusinesses keep costs low and profits high while promising to improve (in the future).

Food & Water Europe is working to ensure agriculture policy supports farmers and consumers while exposing the practices that hide the truth.
