Environmental advocates not feeling thankful for Gov. Moore’s leadership void on climate, environment
Baltimore, MD — Today, environmental advocates organized by Food & Water Watch gathered outside the Maryland Department of the Environment to deliver a large symbolic greeting card to Governor Moore, reading “Thanks For Nothing, Governor Moore.” The inside of the card listed many of Moore’s climate and environmental failures this year, including:
- Signing the Next Generation Energy Act into law, opening Maryland up to new fracked gas and nuclear plants;
- Failing to implement a 100% renewable energy by 2035 plan and a clean power plan as promised;
- Refusing to make polluters pay the astronomical costs of climate change, by vetoing the RENEW Act, Maryland’s superfund cost assessment bill, which would have quantified the cost of climate change to Marylanders;
- Vetoing the Data Center Impact Analysis and Report bill, which would have established a study on the environmental and economic footprint of data centers in Maryland;
- Allowing utilities to continue raising electricity billing rates;
- Issuing a permit for Baltimore’s coal export facility that fails to protect local residents from the health and environmental impacts of the facility;
- Allowing Maryland residents to continue being evicted and foreclosed on for unpaid water bills.
Food & Water Watch Maryland Organizer Jomar Lloyd issued the following statement:
“Governor Moore hasn’t given the environmental community much to be thankful for. He opened Maryland up to new fracked gas plants when he’d promised us clean energy, and he embraced costly, polluting data centers when we wanted lower electricity bills.
“The governor promised bold action on climate, but three years into his administration he has yet to show much leadership on many of Maryland’s most critical environmental issues. Moore must right his wrongs. That means showing up next legislative session to fight for affordable energy, clean water, and a healthy environment for all.”
