Legislature must ensure legitimacy of study and codify critical requirements and timeline by overriding Governor’s veto
Annapolis, MD — Today, Governor Moore announced that he will be allocating funding to study the cost of climate change in Maryland. Earlier this year, Moore vetoed the RENEW Act, Maryland’s Climate Superfund study bill, which would have done just that. The announcement comes ahead of a special session slated for next week where the legislature is poised to consider overriding Moore’s veto of the popular RENEW Act, which passed by a super majority.
Food & Water Watch’s Maryland Director Jorge Aguilar issued this statement following the announcement:
“Given the waffling that Governor Moore has done on RENEW, the Maryland legislature must do right by the study and override Moore’s veto, ensuring the study’s legitimacy. Moore’s announcement insinuates funding may not be secured until 2027, delaying the study by another year. Maryland does not have time to wait for climate action, and we need our legislature to ensure action is taken now.
“Before the veto, Maryland lawmakers mandated critical provisions regarding the substance and timeline for the study. It is unclear what Governor Moore will ultimately call for in the study and when it will be finalized — or if he will change his mind again in a few months. Maryland must find a way to both offset the heavy financial costs that taxpayers are already bearing from the climate crisis and make polluters pay.”
