High costs come as Trump spreads false claims about food affordability

President Trump campaigned on a promise to lower food prices for American consumers. Instead, as we approach Thanksgiving, prices for holiday staples are ballooning.

Food & Water Watch analysis of the latest available Consumer Price Index data finds that from January to September 2025, prices for staple Thanksgiving foods increased far above the rate of inflation (2.2%):

  • Turkey: 3%
  • Stuffing (bread/crackers): 3.9%
  • Cranberry sauce and other canned fruits and vegetables: 4.5%
  • Canned sweet potatoes, green beans and other canned vegetables: 5%
  • Potatoes: 7.3%

This analysis comes as Trump spreads false claims about food affordability and pats himself on the back for reportedly lowering food prices. A fact check of the Administration’s analysis finds that the only way Americans can save money on Thanksgiving is by eating less and skipping sides. Meanwhile, the latest data on consumer prices is scheduled for release tomorrow; it is likely that the Trump administration will miss that deadline due to the ongoing government shutdown.

Food & Water Watch Research Director Amanda Starbuck issued the following statement:

“Thanks to Trump, Americans will have to tighten their belts this Thanksgiving. Trump promised lower food prices, but has done nothing to make it happen. Instead, he is misleading the public to mask a serious reality: this will be an expensive Thanksgiving. If Trump is serious about lowering costs, he must begin by taking on the biggest food monopolies.”
