Constituents ramp up pressure on lawmakers to deliver utility bill relief as session enters final weeks
Albany, NY — In the wake of Albany leadership leaving the NY HEAT Act out of the state budget, communities across New York are ramping up a coordinated grassroots push to pass the legislation before the session ends in June. In the coming weeks, constituents will rally in key Assembly districts to demand action to address soaring utility costs.
This statewide campaign calls on elected officials to move beyond symbolic support and fight to pass the NY HEAT Act — a bill that would lower energy bills, transition buildings off fossil fuels, and provide crucial relief to working New Yorkers.
Events will focus on the following lawmakers based on their level of support for the bill:
Non-sponsors being urged to support and co-sponsor the NY HEAT Act. Events will call on these lawmakers to support the bill, sign on as co-sponsors, and fight to deliver urgently needed relief from unaffordable utility bills.
- Asm. Judy Griffin (AD21 — Long Island)
- Asm. Charles Lavine (AD13 — Long Island)
- Asm. Didi Barrett (AD106 — Hudson Valley)
- Asm. Landon Dais (AD77 — The Bronx)
Current co-sponsors are encouraged to prioritize the NY HEAT Act and rally their peers to support the bill. At events in these districts, constituents are inviting their Assemblymembers to rally alongside them, amplify their support for the NY HEAT Act, and urge colleagues to prioritize the bill and push for final passage.
- Asm. Amy Paulin (AD88 — Westchester County)
- Asm. Jonathan Jacobson (AD104 — Hudson Valley)
Champions of the NY HEAT Act. Community members will also rally with leading champions of the bill, including Asm. Micah Lasher (AD69 — Manhattan), urging other lawmakers to follow their lead in prioritizing real, immediate relief for struggling New Yorkers.
Additional events are being planned across the state as constituents step up pressure on lawmakers to act before session ends.
At these events, community members will send a clear message: soft support is not enough. Lawmakers who claim to support the bill must use their political capital to get it over the finish line. New Yorkers are fed up with vague promises while their costs keep rising. It’s time for elected officials to step up and deliver.
“People across this state are getting crushed by outrageous utility bills while our leaders in Albany drag their feet and point fingers instead of acting,” said Laura Shindell, New York State Director at Food & Water Watch. “The NY HEAT Act is popular and ready to pass — but it won’t happen unless our Assemblymembers stop stalling and show the leadership their constituents need. If our representatives care about working people, now is the time to prove it.”
The NY HEAT Act would cap energy bills at 6% of household income — saving one in four New Yorkers an average of $136/month. It would also help transition buildings, the state’s largest source of climate pollution, off fossil fuels — reducing dependence on volatile gas prices and avoiding costly investment in outdated gas infrastructure. The bill has serious momentum and broad support across the state, and has passed the Senate in each of the last two years.
