New energy plan embraces false solutions over popular anti-fracking stance

New energy plan embraces false solutions over popular anti-fracking stance

Today, at a press conference in Allegheny County where 35 municipalities have passed anti-fracking ordinances, Governor Shapiro unveiled an energy plan that failed to address the destructive impacts of fracking on Pennsylvania communities. Instead, Shapiro’s plan embraces the buildout of “all-of-the-above” energy projects including industry false climate solutions like factory farm biogas, hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel.

The Governor’s plan does not once mention climate change. As the second largest fracked gas producing state, Pennsylvania’s fossil fuel industry has an outsized role in driving the worsening climate crisis. This proposal to build new energy projects with less oversight, through initiatives like the “RESET Board,” opens the floodgates for even more environmental harm, allowing companies to bypass necessary reviews and community input.

Food & Water Watch Pennsylvania State Director Megan McDonough released the following statement in response:

“Any energy plan for Pennsylvania must include a ban on fracking. Instead, Governor Shapiro’s cowardly plan avoids the topic altogether, embracing dirty, dangerous false solutions that will neither make a dent in the climate crisis or help communities on the frontlines of fracking.

“It is insulting for Shapiro to suggest that environmental advocates – who fight daily for climate action, clean air, and the protection of vulnerable communities – would back a plan that promotes more gas plants and dirty energy projects that put all of these at risk. Make no mistake: this is not a plan for Pennsylvanians as Governor Shapiro claims. This is a plan for Josh Shapiro’s political aspirations while leaving the real needs of Pennsylvanians behind.”
