Dirty, dangerous and costly Big Tech handout is the wrong direction for New York

Albany, NY — In her State of the State blueprint released today, Governor Hochul pledged to pursue an affordability agenda, while simultaneously embracing a dangerous future of costly dirty nuclear power buildout in New York. The push is reportedly part of a plan to attract Big Tech corporations’ power-hungry AI data centers and microchip factories to upstate New York.

Food & Water Watch research details how nuclear power has long been proven an expensive, dirty and dangerous false solution to the clean energy transition. 153 groups oppose new nuclear buildout in New York.

In response, Food & Water Watch New York State Director Laura Shindell issued the following statement:

“Governor Hochul’s nuclear embrace is a Big Tech handout masquerading as energy policy — it could not be more wrong. Building dangerous new nuclear power plants to fuel corporate profits is a waste of time and money that we don’t have. If our Governor is serious about pursuing a more affordable New York, her cap and trade program must fund the clean energy transition for New Yorkers, not burn money on new nuclear plants.

“Governor Hochul must drop the nuclear charade, and refocus on real climate and affordable energy solutions. Governor Hochul must pass the NY HEAT Act in her state budget, to put money in New Yorkers’ pockets and move off the fossil fuels supercharging climate chaos.”
