Draft scope represents Gov. Hochul’s latest embrace of dangerous nuclear power
Albany, NY — Today, the New York State Energy Planning Board released a draft scope of issues that will be covered in the next New York State Energy Plan. The final plan is expected to outline the steps to achieving a zero emissions electric grid by 2040, as required by the landmark Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act (Climate Act).
In response, Food & Water Watch New York State Director Laura Shindell issued the following statement:
“New York is woefully behind on our climate goals — Governor Hochul must show more urgency in closing the gap. Her State Energy Plan may be the last chance she has to show New Yorkers she is serious about executing our landmark Climate Act and staving off the worst of the climate crisis. She must waste no time making it a reality. Hochul’s State Energy Plan must move New York off fossil fuels, double down on clean energy buildout and say no to nuclear.”
Just last week, 153 New York organizations, institutions, coalitions, and grassroots groups sent a letter to Governor Hochul, calling on her to protect New York’s landmark climate law and keep dangerous nuclear power, the focus of a NYSERDA sponsored summit last week, out of the state’s energy future.
