Florida Temporary Organizer

SUMMARY:

FWW is hiring a Tampa Bay organizer to help with our local affordable energy campaign. The project seeks to lower the Increasing energy burden communities face while also transitioning our state off of fossil fuels.  Our organizer will be working with our Senior Florida organizer in Tampa Bay as well as with our affordable energy coalition. They will be tasked with helping educate residents in the Tampa Bay region about our efforts to pass county-level policies to lower the costs of electricity by phasing out fossil fuels, increasing access to energy efficiency programs, and developing climate resiliency programs in the region. The organizer will help recruit and coordinate volunteer activist leaders in their area and continue to forge new alliances.

This is a 3-4 month, part-time position that would start as soon as possible. The Florida organizer will work extensively in the community on outreach, base-building, and on engagement with our members and allies. The position will utilize grassroots organizing tactics to gain support for our issues among key elected officials.

About Food & Water Watch

Since 2005, Food & Water Watch has been a leading nonprofit running strategic campaigns to transition the U.S. away from fossil fuels, ensure safe drinking water for all, and challenge the corporate control of our food, water and democracy. We utilize online and field organizing to build the people power we need to win real victories – including banning fracking in New York and Maryland.

In Florida, Food & Water Watch has run successful campaigns against fracking for oil, defeated desalination and bottled water projects, and protected residents from the harms of privatized water systems. Most recently, FWW has been focused on passing local measures to bolster efforts to support real renewable energy to address the climate crisis while addressing exorbitant rate hikes.

We don’t accept any corporate or government funding so we can stand up for what we believe in without any conflicts of interest.  Our work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Miami Herald, the Orlando Sentinel and hundreds of other outlets throughout the state and around the country.

This is a temporary position starting as soon as possible and going through mid-May 2017.  Our organizers will be working as part of the Florida team.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Work with our base of organizations and individuals in support of our local affordable energy campaign and continue to recruit new allies.
• Implement grassroots organizing and public education campaign tactics to help educate elected officials, specifically in Hillsborough County, about the need for a comprehensive affordable energy and climate plan
• Help with planning for public events to educate residents in key districts and recruit/maintain our volunteer team.
• Develop educational materials such as flyers and action alerts. Maintain activist database and email lists to effectively communicate to members and supporters.
• Travel the region to motivate local organizations and individuals through public speaking, media appearances, strategic planning and training, and meetings with state and local government officials.
• Work with a team to develop strategic campaign plans including goals, strategies, and tactics.
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, the person in this position is expected to have an understanding of Food & Water Watch’s Strategic Organizing model and an ability to develop and carry out campaign strategy.

The Organizer will be expected to work closely with organizing staff, volunteers and allied organizations to ensure campaigns are moving forward to achieve programmatic goals.

• Strong interest in Food & Water Watch priorities and commitment to social change.
• Strong verbal and written communication and time management skills.
• Desire to develop campaign and grassroots organizing skills.
• Ability to work well with a wide variety of people and to coordinate diverse tasks; ability to present technical concepts to a mass audience; a can-do attitude and commitment to public interest work.
• Ability to think creatively and quickly to respond to legislative developments and to take advantage of breaking news
• Access to a car and ability to travel around region as required.
• Adequate knowledge of word processing, email, internet and spreadsheet software. Experience or knowledge of digital organizing tools is a plus, especially VAN.
• Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States

Office Location: This is a remote work position based in the Tampa Bay Region. Will consider candidates that live in Hillsborough County or the adjacent region as the work is mostly focused in the county

Compensation: $22/hour for up to 20 hours per week for 3-4 months
