On Tuesday, Virginia residents will have an opportunity to submit public comments on the Mountain Valley Pipeline’s Southgate extension. A wide array of Virginia community members plan to attend the public comment session alongside environmental and public health groups. The hearing is one of three for the MVP Southgate project, with the other two being in North Carolina on Monday and Thursday.
The MVP Southgate project is a proposed extension of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), which has already been cited for hundreds of violations of federal and state water safeguards and has also had multiple permits suspended or vacated. The corporation responsible for MVP has historically exhibited a complete disregard for Virginia’s environment, and the health and safety of the state’s communities.
Groups planning to attend the public comment period will speak out against the reckless buildout of fossil fuel infrastructure that harms communities and is occurring at a time when the earth is warming rapidly due to carbon emissions, in states with untapped potential to act as clean and renewable energy leaders. They will also highlight the ludicrous Draft Environmental Impact Statement released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
