Washington, D.C. -- Major national advocacy groups and individuals resisting Trump’s harmful agenda held a powerful event -- ‘A Resistance Address: Defending American Values in a Time of Moral Crisis’ -- outside the White House this evening to send Trump off before his speech to Congress. Speakers from a diverse array of organizations, as well as affected individuals, made it clear that Trump’s agenda does not represent the values of the American people. They pointed to how, in the disastrous first month of his presidency, Trump has targeted and harmed women, people of color, members of LGBTQ community, immigrants, and the environment. Speakers noted that Trump is expected to articulate a discriminatory agenda that continues to put people in harm’s way, undermines equality and our shared values, and damages our environment.
Speakers described how they and their communities are being harmed, and set out a positive vision of equality, inclusiveness, and prosperity for everyone. Organizations involved include Food & Water Watch, ACLU, MoveOn.org Civic Action, National Nurses United, Hip Hop Caucus, DailyKos, Our Revolution, and many others. Rosie O’Donnell was invited and joined the rally to help amplify the messages of the groups and harmed individuals.
“When Trump proposes massive cuts to the EPA and common sense environmental protections, that means more people will get sick or die from toxic pollution, lead contamination, and other harms,” said Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch. “These cuts are not just attacks on the environment. They are an assault on American values, communities, and people. We must, and Congress must, resist this reactionary agenda and fight for a ban on fracking and new pipelines, fight to strengthen clean water protections, and fight for a livable climate for future generations.”
"The Trump administration has gone to great lengths of dividing and not uniting citizens, creating an 'us' versus 'them' environment when speaking to all Americans, it is shameful, and dangerous. Only when the American values of justice and equality are upheld will we escape the moral crisis that this discriminatory agenda represents for our nation,” said Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., President and CEO of the Hip Hop Caucus.
"We rally not only to resist but to build a movement of millions working for social, environmental and economic justice,” said Larry Cohen of Our Revolution.
Will Fischer, a marine and member of VoteVets, an organization representing more than 500,000 veterans across America, called on Congress to take a vote on getting information from the Department of Justice on the president's ties to Russia out in the open. He said, "All we want to know is the truth about Trump. Has he broken the law, has he violated the Constitution, has he put our national security at risk?"
“Registered nurses demand that the new administration and Congress abandon their plans to cut Americans’ access to healthcare, and instead expand it so that health care is guaranteed as a basic human right in this country,” said Sandra Falwell, RN, a neo-natal intensive care nurse and vice president of National Nurses United. “All around the country, people are standing up to the Administration and Congress, saying, ‘No, we will not tolerate the disastrous Republican proposals to cut health care.’ But it is not enough to only fight for the status quo--because the status quo is not working for tens of millions of people in this country. What we need instead is to move our country forward with a single-payer, Medicare for All system.”
"NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to stand with our friends and allies tonight at the Resistance Address to send a message that Donald Trump's vision for women, our bodies, and our freedoms pose a clear and present danger to women and families across the country,” said Kaylie Hanson Long, NARAL Pro-Choice America. “At NARAL, we’re mobilizing and organizing the pro-choice majority in support of a worldview where women are equal partners in society -- where we can be whatever we want to be, and have the policies in place to support us as we chart our own destinies. We were built for tough fights, and we're ready to resist, persist and persevere against the Trump administration."
"As people mobilize across the country against Trump, we need to resist locally and protect each other's communities,” said Dr. Maha Hilal, steering committee member of the DC Justice for Muslims Coalition. “In particular to Muslims, the outpouring of support has been inspiring but we know these Islamophobic policies go beyond bans and harassment at airports. Muslims have been targeted and discriminated against for the last 15 years by the policies of the War on Terror, so it’s important that we see the Muslim Ban in the context of long-standing and systemic racism. It is great to demand #NoMuslimBan, but we need to move forward and work to ensure that Muslims cease to be targets of national security policies that unfairly and disproportionately malign the entire community."
"This society is undergoing a political and moral crisis. And how we collectively choose to respond will say everything about who we are as people, as a society, and as a nation," said Rabbi Jason Kimelman-Block, Director of Bend the Arc Jewish Action.
Note: Organizers noted that the address and rally will feature various parts of the resistance but certainly not all of the resistance, which takes many forms and is far larger than can fit into one event.
