Annapolis, MD — “Governor O’Malley’s regulations sent today to be published in the Maryland Register will open the state to the oil and gas industry and present Marylanders with huge risks to their health, water, air and communities. There is no such thing as safe fracking. Governor O’Malley’s decision to allow fracking in Maryland is particularly alarming given that pro-fracking Governor-elect Larry Hogan takes office in January.
“Governor O’Malley had a legitimate opportunity to heed the science demonstrating that fracking comes with inherent risks to public health and the environment by keeping fracking out of the state. He could have been a true national leader and supported a renewable and sustainable energy future for Maryland. Instead, he established that he is a part of the status quo pushing for continued reliance on fossil fuels. As Governor O’Malley leaves office, his final legacy will be allowing for fracking to come to Maryland.
