At Food & Water Watch we won't take any money from corporations or government entities because we focus on holding them accountable. This allows us to be independent to take the hard-hitting stand required for safe food and clean water – while being accountable to you, our supporters.
As a result, you are the ones directly funding critical campaigns like moving America OFF Fossil Fuels by 2035. But our donations do not only come from personal gifts anymore - people are now mobilizing their networks to become donors and creating personal fundraising pages to help support this work!
It’s a fact that every successful movement must have resources. Our staff members know this, which is why this year seven of us are biking hundreds of miles or hiking high mountains to raise money for Food & Water Watch through the nonprofit Climate Ride.
You can follow along with us on Instagram as we volunteer our time and energy to mobilize friends and family to help protect our food and water – and make democracy work for people AND the planet.
Anyone that participates in a Climate Ride bike ride or hike event commits to raising thousands of dollars for their favorite environmental group – in our case we picked Food & Water Watch of course! Yes, thousands of dollars may seem like a lot of money but you’ll be asking your personal network to help you get there. Usually donations will be in small increments of $5 to $100. It’s how each of our staff riders and hikers reached their goals!
The best news is Climate Ride isn’t the only way to have fun while making meaningful change! Maybe you want to quit smoking, or run your first 5k race, or simply commemorate a special day or anniversary. Whatever speaks to you can be transformed into a fundraiser, taking your special event to the next level – and putting a little more friendly pressure on yourself to reach your personal goals!
We know you care about these issues and we also know that not everyone can write a $10,000(!) check to support our work. Creating a personal fundraiser is a great way to bundle together smaller gifts to have a big impact. And to get your friends and family involved with you in saving the planet!
Many of our participating staffers are not professional fundraisers and have little or no experience with raising money. Despite this, their passion has quickly and (almost) easily transformed into cash (we had a little help from our Development Team, and you will too)!
Gathering donations for your fundraiser requires sharing your story, making people feel like they have a part to play, and some creativity. This year, our Distributed Organizing Manager Saskia Harak made some super creative memes on Instagram and raised over $3,000!
Our fundraising toolkit will show you how to make your own!
Meanwhile, our Florida organizer Michelle Allen utilized a similar technique on Facebook, with her own twist.
Pretty fun, right? If you’re passionate about this work - and we know you are - create a fundraiser today!
