News reports indicate that the Delaware River Basin Commission is set to formally propose a permanent ban on fracking.
The following statement is from Sam Bernhardt, Senior Pennsylvania Organizer at Food & Water Watch:
“After years of campaigning, grassroots activists are on the verge of winning an incredible victory to protect the Delaware River watershed from fracking. The Delaware River Basin Commission’s proposal to make the temporary moratorium into a permanent ban on fracking would protect the water supply for 15 million people in the region. The commission should now move quickly to vote on this proposal.
“In 2011, a coalition of groups derailed a plan to frack the Delaware basin. The next logical step was a ban, and it took years of organizing to get the commission to take action. But if fracking has no place in the Delaware River watershed, it should be banned everywhere else too. Now is the time for bold action on clean, renewable energy—and that requires an immediate end to dangerous fossil fuel extraction projects that are creating climate chaos.”
