Climate Change is real and its effects are already being felt: violent storms, droughts, floods, acidifying oceans and altered growing seasons.
The world has already warmed 1°C since the start of Industrial Revolution, and a 1.5°C rise would bring even more dangerous effects. We would see more extreme heat events, reductions in crop yields, loss of coral reefs and fisheries, and sea level rise that would make tropical storms more deadly.
The “Carbon Budget” for the climate – basically the amount of carbon dioxide we can emit before triggering worse effects – shows that if we go on emitting greenhouse gases at our current rate for just five more years, we’ll race past 1.5°C of warming.
If we end the extraction and burning of fossil fuels, make buildings and appliances as energy efficient and clean as possible, and greatly expand and improve public transit, then we can transition to 100 percent clean energy by 2035.
