Human Resources Generalist I

The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for performing HR-related duties on a professional level and works closely with, and supports, the Human Resources Director and the Chief of Staff.

The Human Resources Generalist I is responsible for performing HR-related duties on a professional level and works closely with, and supports, the Human Resources Director and the Managing Director of Operations.

The HR Generalist I also supports the overall mission of Food & Water Watch, while maximizing employee potential by fostering a positive work environment. The HR Generalist I should have the ability to field questions and resolve some issues when the Director is unavailable. 

This position will report directly to the Human Resources Director.

Office Location: This position is Washington, DC based and approved for temporary remote work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Troubleshooting of all Paycom related issues.
  • Provide program oversight, technical advice and guidance to colleagues regarding   processes and procedures within Paycom.
  • Coordinate and conduct Paycom trainings for new hires as needed.
  • Reconcile health insurance invoices for both accounts ensuring premiums reflect current monthly activity.
  • Performs the biweekly 403b and HSA reconciliation and troubleshoot issues that arise.
  • Performs the quarterly HSA reconciliation and troubleshoot issues that arise.
  • Maintain records and employee personnel-related data (payroll, personal information, leaves, turnover rates etc.) in both paper and the database and ensure all employment requirements are met.
  • Assists with the Recruitment Process including scheduling interviews if Hiring Managers are not scheduling the interviews; and participate in interviews upon request if the HR Director is not available to participate in the interview.
  • Performs the Onboarding Process.     
  • Performs the Offboarding Process.
  • Assists with Open Enrollment for staff with the support of the HR Director.
  • Assist with the FMLA approval process.
  • Process I-9s for new hires.    
  • Process employment verifications.    
  • Update Labor Law posters in each office and ensure company complies with any employment laws and regulations.
  • Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
  • Along with the HR Director, complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or SHRM-CP is a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant and current Human Resources experience with Bachelor’s degree or 5 + years of relevant experience can replace education requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of multi-state employment laws, including EEO and ACA.
  • This is a unionized organization. Experience working with unions is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with payroll is a plus.                                     
  • Strong understanding of I-9 compliance and on boarding.
  • Able to review, source and find applicable candidates for open positions.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with HRIS systems is needed. Paycom experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and the ability to work well within teams across the organization.
  • Commitment to outstanding customer service, both internal and external.
  • Experience resolving issues and escalating internally when appropriate.
  • Fast learner and able to absorb directions clearly and accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Confidentiality is a MUST.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently.

Computer Skills: An individual should be able to work in a computerized environment and have adequate knowledge of word processing, email, internet and spreadsheet software; in particular have coursework or certification in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point and proficiency with all other Microsoft Office products.
