Food & Water Watch Launches Affordable, Sustainable Seafood Recipe Contest

Washington, D.C. – Today, Food & Water Watch launched the “Frugal Fish” recipe contest, a challenge to savvy cooks to create a seafood dinner for four people that costs $25 or less, using fish recommended in Food & Water Watch’s Smart Seafood Guide. Contest entries will be judged by Chef Rocky Barnette and Food & Water Watch staff, and one grand-prize winner will receive $250. Food & Water Watch’s Fish Program promotes safer and more sustainable seafood that is healthier for consumers and our environment; the “Frugal Fish” contest adds some friendly competition in cooking up fish creatively.

“We want to spread the word that it’s very possible – and fun – to cook and eat seafood that’s good for you and the environment on a budget,” said Food & Water Watch Fish Program Director Marianne Cufone.

Chef Rocky Barnette agrees: “When it comes to fish, a little can go a long way in terms of flavor, so you don’t have to spend a lot to get a high-quality meal. We know there are talented cooks out there who will wow us with their ‘Frugal Fish’ creations.”

The contest will run from today, September 21, to Friday, October 16. Entries will be judged on specific criteria including: use of fish from the Smart Seafood Guide; healthiness; originality; taste; and meeting the budget. One grand-prize winner and several runners-up will be chosen to receive a Food & Water Watch gift and be featured in an online recipe collection. The grand-prize winner will also collect a check for $250 from Food & Water Watch.

Food & Water Watch debuted its Smart Seafood Guide in 2008 to help consumers navigate the sometimes overwhelming selection of available seafood, based on a combination of environmental, human health, and economic factors. The wallet-sized card helps consumers choose fish that are less likely to be associated with environmental concerns or those that might contain high amounts of contaminants, like mercury or chemicals, and are most likely to support domestic coastal and fishing communities. This October, the updated 2009 version of the Smart Seafood Guide will be released, and contest entrants will be the first to see it.

Food & Water Watch, a nonprofit consumer organization based in Washington, D.C., works to ensure clean water and safe food in the United States and around the world. We work with various community outreach groups globally to create an economically and environmentally viable future. We advocate for safe, wholesome food produced in a humane and sustainable manner, and public rather than private control of water resources, including oceans, rivers and groundwater. The Food & Water Watch Fish Program promotes cleaner, greener, safer seafood for consumers, while helping to protect the environment and support long-term wellbeing of coastal communities.
