Honduras
In August 2003 thousands of protestors demonstrated against the policies imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), including water privatization policies. But the Honduran resistance to water privatization continues. As Erasto Reyes put it, "In Honduras, the defense of water is a patriotic duty". Eighty percent of the 6.5 million people in Honduras live in poverty, although the country has continued paying back debt to the IMF and other creditors to the tune of $32 million in 2002 and another $16.3 million in 2003.
