Poland's Agriculture Ministry responds to Food & Water Watch's letter regarding the young farmers’ program in the Rural Development Plan for 2007-2013.

In response to your letter of August 9, 2007, we would like to give you following
explanation in regards to the young farmers’ program.

The Rural Development Plan for 2007–2013 was a result of regional consultations and negotiations with the European Commission. The European Commission said farms owned by young farmers should be equal to or larger than the regional average. Therefore, the criteria for the young farmers’ program were set more strict.

However, due to numerous requests received by the Ministry of Agriculture to lower the requirement for minimum farm size in areas where farms tend to be very small, we have asked the European Commission to change this policy.

We will inform you about the results.

Jacek Bogucki
Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture
