Food & Water Watch does an excellent job of keeping tabs on the food safety issues I care about. It would be a full-time job to stay updated myself. Their petitions are simple, to the point, and easy to share.

Midwestern Region

The Midwest is the breadbasket of America making it central to our mission. Communities and activists across the region are hard at work to protect our food and water from corporate control and abuse. Together we are influencing critical decision-makers to help deliver safe food to our families and to create a food system that is sustainable for producers, consumers, and the environment. We’re also fighting to keep public control of local water resources. We are celebrating the residents in Milwaukee, Wi; Marion, IN; and Akron, OH which, with our help, recently have defeated attempts to privatize water public water.

In 2011, we’ll be working across the Midwest to advocate for a Fair Farm Bill and reaching out to the public to help protect access to clean, safe, affordable food and water.

Stop the Iowa Legislature from Protecting Factory Farms

As the 2011 Iowa State Legislative session is wrapping up and the final budget details are being ironed out, corporate ag is pushing to pass two bills to carve out special protections for the factory farm industry before the session is out. One of the bills, HF 589, would criminalize whistleblowers who document factory farm practices, keeping the way factory farms raise meat secret from the public. The other bill, SF 500, would transfer Clean Water Act enforcement from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to the Iowa Department of Agriculture, an agency that has neither the expertise nor the will to hold factory farms accountable for the water pollution they create.

Tell your State Legislators to Vote NO on these bills and make sure they don't get snuck into the final budget bill.

Don't let the Iowa Legislature deregulate factory farms!

There are several bills in the Iowa Legislature that would dismantle years of common-sense regulations for factory farms and make it even more difficult to enact more effective regulations. The corporate livestock industry is pushing for these pieces of legislation, which would give them a free pass to pollute Iowa's air and water with little to no repercussions.

Tell your state legislators to stop these bills and vote "NO" if they come up for a vote!

Keep Ohio's State Parks Safe from Drilling

Fracking is a type of gas drilling that injects millions of gallons of hydraulic fluids - a mixture of chemicals, water and sand - into a well to create pressure that cracks open underground rock and releases natural gas. This process can deplete and contaminate local water, damage the environment and threaten public health.

Right now, there is a bill in the state house of representatives that would open up Ohio's state parks to this reckless process. We know the oil and gas industry will spend millions to open up as much land to drilling as possible. That's why it's crucial for us to stand up for Ohio's state parks.
