Eastern Region
The dedicated team of organizers in the Eastern Region are working to ensure that the essential resources of food & water are managed for the public good, rather than private gain. Sustainable farmers across the region are going under, mainly due to US food policy that pushes the get big or get out mentality. The consolidation of food production and processing not only hurts local farmers and communities, but can also increase the risk of food-borne illness and increases the amount of unhealthy processed food on the shelves of our grocery stores. The Big Ag food production model is also pushing out into our oceans where they industry is supporting policies that will promote factory fish farms, ocean privatization and genetically engineered salmon. Our water resources in the region are also under attack by water bottlers and private water companies that are seeking to control local water resources. Budget problems leave our communities turning to these water profiteers as a way to fix gaping budget holes. Unfortunately the upfront cash offered by these privateers often results in long term debt, making communities worse off in the long term. If water privateers were not a big enough problem facing our water resources, fracking for gas in the region is threatening drinking water for millions of people. Our members and volunteers are joining us on the front lines of all these fights and we need you there too.
Get involved locally to help ban fracking.

Tell Our Elected Officials to Say "NO" to Walmart!
In recent years, consolidation and mergers have left just a handful of powerful middlemen Walmart the largest of all standing between farmers and consumers.
These giants are squeezing their suppliers the men and women who grow and make our food forcing them to do things the wrong way: lowering wages, using unsustainable practices and producing unhealthy food.
Rather than hand it over to Walmart, we need to reform our food system with policies based on principles such as fairness, competition, diversity and sustainability.

Don't let privatization put independent fishermen out of business.
A new privatized catch share plan is being proposed for the monkfish fishery, impacting fishermen from North Carolina to Maine. Under catch shares, the government hands out a percentage of the total amount of fish that can be caught to fishermen and corporations based on how much they caught in the past. These shares are then bought and sold in a private market. While this may sound fair, in reality it puts many fishermen out of business when the price to go fishing skyrockets.
Many independent fishermen make their living by fishing multiple species. But even though fish are a public resource, as more and more species come under catch share programs, fishermen are being forced to pay private individuals or corporations to go fishing. If it keeps up, only the biggest operations will be able to afford to stay in the water.
Take action now and tell the New England and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Councils to say no to more catch shares!
