Groups That Establish Principles for Responsible Shrimp Farming Without Specific Label Standards
Environmental Justice Foundation
The London based Environmental Justice Foundation has created a draft protocol
for sustainable shrimp aquaculture as part of their campaign to
encourage retailers to stop selling shrimp that was produced with harm
to the environment, local communities and human rights.
International Principles for Responsible Shrimp Farming
These principles were created by a consortium of actors comprised of the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA), World Bank, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), and United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).
The principles attempt to address site selection, pond design, water
management, brood stock and postlarvae, feeding, health management,
food safety and social responsibility.
Redmanglar Internacional
Redmanglar Internacional
is a network of organizations throughout Central and Latin America
dedicated to the protection of coastal ecosystems and mangrove forests.
They also work to guarantee the way of life of the traditional and
indigenous communities that depend on mangrove ecosystems for their
sustenance. Redmanglar Internacional specifically fights the
destruction caused by shrimp farms. In 2003, they created a Resolution for Certification that calls for a moratorium on certification schemes and a list of criteria for any existing certification scheme.
