FDA Considers Mislabeling Irradiated Food
Press Release: The Food and Drug Administration announced today that it may allow irradiated food to be mislabeled with alternate terms such as pasteurized. This move by FDA would deny consumers clear information about whether they are buying food that has been exposed to high doses of ionizing radiation.
Alaska Fisheries Council Promotes Privatization
Press Release: During the first year of Alaska‚ crab rationalization program, 1,150 fishermen lost their jobs and millions of crabs were wasted, and yet the North Pacific Fishery Management Council failed to consider socio-economic or environmental effects of rationalization in a requested report reviewed this week. A coalition of consumer and fishing groups criticized the report for deflecting blame for the drop in crab price away from processor domination of the fishery and criticized the council for considering a sector split that could set up the cod fishery for the same kind of program.

Food & Water Watch commends the National Organic Standards Board for accepting organic seafood recommendations that will protect both consumers and the environment. Today, the board voted to certify as organic only land-based, closed-system fish farms that do not feed wild fishmeal.

Bush Administration Shirks Responsibility on World Water Day
Press Release: Upon passage of the Clean Water Act in 1977, Congress declared, “it is the national policy that Federal financial assistance be provided to construct publicly owned waste treatment works.” Today, EPA predicts an annual gap of $22 billion between the funds available and the funds needed to maintain the nations pipes and treatment plants to meet minimum federal standards for drinking water.

IDB: Stop Pushing Water Privatization in Latin America
Press Release: Since its founding in 1959, the Washington, DC-based Inter-American Development Bank has provided $140 billion in loans and grants to governments and, increasingly of late, private corporations in 26 Latin American and Caribbean nations. The IDB is the largest multilateral lender in the Americas, supporting energy, transportation, telecommunications, agriculture, urban development and health care projects.
