Statement of Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter
Washington, D.C.—“Today, the Senate voted 62-37 to appoint Rick Perry to oversee the Department of Energy. This is disturbing, particularly since he wanted to eliminate the department just a few years ago. Until the end of last year, the former governor of Texas-turned presidential candidate-turned reality TV star was on the board of Energy Transfer Partners and Sunoco Logistics Partners, both linked to controversial and destructive oil and gas pipeline projects.
“When it comes to fracking and fossil fuels, he has accepted nearly $14 million in campaign contributions from oil and gas company PACs and trade associations and their employees, including Exxon, Chevron and BP.
“Like other cabinet appointments made by President Trump, Rick Perry is a completely wrong for the job. With him leading the Department of Energy, we will have to fight his misguided focus on developing infrastructure for fossil fuels instead of a clean energy future.”
