Support reporting requirements for water bottlers – AB 301
There are an estimated 112 water bottling facilities operating in 33 different counties in California. Water bottling facilities can pull water from groundwater sources and deplete the local supply, yet there is no requirement that bottling companies report to public how much water they are bottling. AB 301Â will change that.
AB 301 is authored by Assembly member Filipe Fuentes, sponsored by Food & Water Watch, and endorsed by a wide range of consumer, environmental, and labor organizations. It requires the public reporting of how much water California bottling companies are extracting and putting in bottles to sell for profit. This information is critical for communities where bottling plants are operating or planned so that they can effectively manage their water resources.
Bottled water is a bad deal for consumers and the environment and communities are fighting back against attempts by large companies like Nestle to come in and profit off community water sources. AB 301 will help hold bottlers accountable by giving communities important information they need to protect community water.
