Food & Water Watch does an excellent job of keeping tabs on the food safety issues I care about. It would be a full-time job to stay updated myself. Their petitions are simple, to the point, and easy to share.

Stop Monsanto’s GE Sweet Corn!

Tell Walmart to Reject GE Corn

Why is Walmart hiding behind its misleading, greenwashed corporate PR?

Food & Water Watch and our allies have collected over 460,000 petition signatures asking Walmart not to carry Monsanto’s new genetically engineered sweet corn, which could be planted this spring. Instead of doing the right thing and rejecting this unlabeled, untested and potentially unsafe produce, Walmart has issued misleading PR statements that are nothing but corporate doublespeak. Without a firm public statement of rejection, Walmart’s assertions that it “cares about consumers” are utterly meaningless.

Why should you ask Walmart to reject Monsanto’s Genetically Engineered (GE) Sweet Corn?

  • Whether you shop at Walmart or not, they are the largest U.S. food retailer, and if they won’t sell genetically engineered sweet corn, it’s likely that farmers won’t plant it.
  • Genetically engineered sweet corn will not be labeled, so you won’t know what you’re buying.
  • Monsanto’s GE sweet corn hasn’t been tested for human safety, and it contains three different genetically engineered traits that have never been used in food eaten directly by people.

Petition to Walmart:

As a consumer, I am disappointed that you have not refused to buy Monsanto’s GE sweet corn, and have been misleading your customers by saying you don’t “specifically source genetically engineered foods.” I refuse to purchase any sweet corn from you, and I refuse to buy your misleading PR.

When you take action on this issue, we’ll keep you informed on this and other important issues.
