Mad Cow Disease is believed to spread by feeding cattle tissues from animals infected with BSE and similar diseases. In turn, people contract the human form of mad cow disease when they eat high-risk materials, such as the brain or spine, from diseased cattle. Therefore, it is very important that we have a good inspection system in place to make sure the cattle aren’t fed contaminated feed, and that if they do get the disease, their meat doesn’t reach people’s dinner plates.

In August 2005, in response to a Freedom of Information Act request to the USDA, we received over 800 records written by USDA inspectors detailing mad cow disease regulation violations.
