* *Imported shrimp
*
Key West Pink shrimp (also known as “Tortugas”)
*
Pacific Bay shrimp
*
Pacific pink or “Oregon” pink shrimp
*
Rock shrimp
*
Royal red shrimp
*
South Atlantic white shrimp
Unlike imported shrimp, wild-caught U.S. shrimp is unlikely to contain the drugs and chemicals that are used heavily on many foreign shrimp farms. The U.S. shrimp fleet has worked to decrease bycatch (untargeted marine life caught accidentally) associated with shrimping by using devices to let sea turtles and fish escape from trawl nets. The ecological impacts from shrimping in the United States are less significant than those of many foreign shrimp farms. Additionally, choosing shrimp from the Gulf, the Carolinas, Maine or the West Coast supports the economic wellbeing of U.S. coastal communities. Stock depletion is not a major concern with shrimp because populations grow and reproduce quickly.
