U.S. Farmed Oysters

by Elissar Khalek last modified 2008-12-10 11:08

Oysters are filter feeders, so wild-caught fish is not used in their feed. Therefore, oyster farming does not deplete the wild fish stock as does farming of many other types of seafood. Farmed oysters can actually improve the health of the environment they are farmed in by filtering the water. Wild oysters may contain levels of PCB contamination that pose a health risk to adults and children.
