Bluefish
Bluefish is very high in both mercury and PCBs—contaminants that can potentially be harmful to health. This is one of the most popular recreational fish along the Atlantic coast; there is also a small commercial fishery. Bluefish have recovered from overfishing in the Atlantic, although biomass estimates in the Gulf of Mexico are unknown. While recreational fishermen often catch bluefish with hook and line gear, some commercial gear types such as pound nets, seines and trawls are associated with catching significant numbers of non-targeted species (bycatch).
