Tell Congress No Industrial Fish Farms
Fish farms can pollute your body and the ocean. Congress needs to hear from you!
A bill being considered in both the House of Representatives and the Senate would open our oceans to industrial fish farms and could harm ocean wildlife, fishing communities, and consumer health.
The National Offshore Aquaculture Act of 2007, also known as H.R. 2010 and S. 1609, lacks basic environmental and socioeconomic safeguards, while promoting a dubious new industry.
Aquaculture proponents claim that wild fish are in trouble and the only way to meet consumer demand for seafood is through aquaculture. The situation is not this cut and dry. Raising one pound of farmed fish requires two to six pounds of wild fish to be used as feed, increasing pressure on wild fish populations. This industry also threatens consumers with fish produced using antibiotics, chemicals, and hormones. Further, it could unfairly compete and undercut the price that small-scale fishermen receive for wild-caught fish.
Tell Congress to protect your health, fishing communities and the oceans.
