Don’t let experimental genetically engineered salmon reach your plate!
AquaBounty, the company pushing for the approval of its genetically altered salmon, hasn’t taken the potential risks seriously. First they downplayed the chances of GE salmon escaping into the wild, and then failed to take a good look at the range of threats such escapes could pose. These quotes from Fish and Wildlife Service scientists speak for themselves:
“The environmental impact of escaped GE salmon is of great concern.” – Gregory Moyer, Regional Geneticist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
“…approval of the proposal is premature, given the unknowns and uncertainties regarding the possible ecological and environmental effects of these fish.” – Jeff Adams, Branch Chief, Fairbanks Fish and Wildlife Field Office, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
“…I do think the chance of escapement is huge” – Deborah Burger, Manager, Chattahoochee Forest National Fish Hatchery, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Heard enough? You can help us raise the profile of these criticisms by sending a letter to President Obama.
It’s time to turn up the pressure and shed light on the doubt within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service around genetically engineered salmon. We are a non-profit consumer advocacy group that works to keep our food and water clean and safe. Help us make this issue a priority by asking President Obama to step in and stand up for consumers and the environment: Act now.
