Spill the Truth About BP's Atlantis

Food & Water Watch officially filed a lawsuit in a Houston federal court today. The suit seeks a temporary injunction to halt BP’s Atlantis operations in the Gulf of Mexico. As oil from the Deepwater Horizon continues to leak off the coast of Louisiana, we are reminded that BP continues to operate Atlantis without critical safety documents.  In the meantime, we have launched Spill the Truth, a special website created to warn about the potential dangers of Atlantis and to ask people to take action to help prevent another BP disaster.

On Sunday evening, CBS’s 60 Minutes ran a riveting story about the BP/Transocean Deepwater Horizon disaster, which a lot of people are talking about, including Jed Lewison of Daily Kos. The piece included an intimate interview with a Transocean engineer named Mike Williams who was among the last survivors of the explosion and had to actually jump into the ocean from approximately ten stories above it to escape.  The second segment introduced another face to the Horizon story when it revealed the identity of the whistleblower who came to Food & Water Watch with information about BP’s Atlantis oil platform, a former BP engineering subcontractor named  Kenneth Abbott.

Visit www.spillthetruth.org and take action to help prevent another BP disaster from happening in the Gulf. Ask President Obama to immediately close down BP’s Atlantis oil platform to prevent another major oil spill even bigger and more destructive than Horizon.

Mr. Abbott tried to warn BP executives about missing engineering documents that are critical to the safe operation of Atlantis. It is because of Kenneth Abbott that we have an opportunity to prevent another disaster that could be several times more destructive than the Horizon explosion and bigger than the Exxon Valdez spill in just two days. Atlantis poses an enormous safety risk, one that could seriously endanger its workers and the environment in and around the Gulf of Mexico, including the livelihoods and well being of residents in surrounding communities. BP management has noted that an accident resulting from “catastrophic Operator error” on Atlantis could occur.

We are asking the Obama Administration to immediately stop BP from operating Atlantis until there is proof that the oil platform is safe. Spill the Truth was created to share information about Atlantis with the public so that people understand just how potentially dangerous the situation is. Visit www.spillthetruth.org and ask President Obama to intervene immediately.
