Republicans and Democrats Unite Against GE Salmon

Today, as we await the results of elections that once again reflect the stark contrast between the ideologies of the Democratic and Republican parties, one issue has inspired bipartisan cooperation. Even in the face of midterm elections, both sides of the aisle have managed to set aside their differences to address a critical issue facing consumers. Democrats and Republicans alike are reminding the FDA that the public is not happy with their haphazard consideration of whether to approve genetically-engineered salmon — the first ever GE animal — for public consumption.

At least thirty House members and thirteen senators have written letters to President Obama’s Administration to either express serious concerns about the manner in which FDA is conducting its review process, or to call for the outright prohibition of the approval of the GE fish.

Some members are stepping up to the plate with legislation of their own to stop GE salmon from getting into our food supply. Representative Young (R-AK) introduced H.R. 6265, which would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to prevent the approval of genetically-engineered fish.  Representatives Young and Wu (D-OR-1) both introduced H.R. 6264, which would amend that same act to require, at minimum, labeling of genetically-engineered fish.

Rep. DeLauro (D-CT-3), along with Reps. Frank (D-MA-4) and Woolsey (D-CA-6) introduced the ‘‘Consumer Right To Know Food Labeling Act of 2010’’ (H.R. 6325), a bill that would require labeling of food that contains bio-engineered animal products, and specifically includes a requirement for the labeling of GE salmon.

These pieces of legislation, along with the letters sent to the FDA, send a strong message to the agency that the people are watching and do not support approval of GE salmon.  Regardless of the outcome of the election, Congress will be ready to continue fighting against the approval of this fish, both during the lame duck session (November – December), and on to the beginning of the next Congressional session in January.

Amidst political battle over control in the House and Senate, both parties are joining together to challenge the FDA. This is a powerful message. Is the FDA listening?
