Another Round in the Battle Against the Bottle

CNBC’s Power Lunch provided a forum today for yet another debate on the subject of bottled water versus the tap, following a special segment called Liquid Assets. Food & Water Watch Senior Legislative and Policy Analyst Mitch Jones squared off against International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) President and CEO Joe Doss in front of program hosts Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, Sue Herera and Tyler Mathisen.

Food & Water Watch Senior Legislative and Policy Analyst Mitch Jones squares off against International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) President and CEO Joe Doss on CNBC’s Power Lunch. In our opinion, Jones wins.

Representing the bottled water industry, IBWA’s Doss didn’t have much to say other than to explain that much of their product comes from municipal sources and is very refreshing. He also tried to suggest that IBWA represents members who are primarily small business owners. But let’s not forget that they also represent some large companies like Nestlé.

In contrast, Food & Water Watch’s own Mitch Jones took it to the IBWA with class and fervor, pointing out the connection between declining public infrastructure and increased bottled water sales, and reminding consumers how critical it is to reinvest in municipal infrastructure.

  1. San Francisco-based online eco-products retailer, The Best Bottle Company, has launched an environmentally friendly reusable and collapsible water bottle, which folds into a 2″ wide x 3″ diameter hockey puck shape when not in use. The bottle is ideal for individuals constantly on the go, schoolchildren, and air travelers who are restricted from carrying liquids through security checkpoints.
